With Academy season here, email boxes and mailboxes are filling up with invitations to guild screenings and special events, luring their receivers to see this year’s contenders and hear about how they were crafted. As people fan out to Los Angeles area’s screening rooms, they will experience a whole variety of screening rooms. Some are great facilities, others have shortcomings.
Below is a short guide to the most popular screening rooms in the L.A area. As with everything in Los Angeles, location, parking and security procedures are primary considerations when choosing a screening room—whether you’re booking it or visiting as an audience member.
Last year at this time, getting onto a studio lot was like trying to get into Terminal 1 at LAX on a holiday weekend. At the moment lot access is a little easier, but that could change at any time depending on the national security barometer.
The theaters to the right are listed alphabetically, not by size. When considering where to go, remember that small theaters fill up fast and you may have to sit on a folding chair, the floor (where permitted) or be turned away (ouch!). So arrive early!

Motion capture systems developer Vicon is previewing a futuristic new “Mobile Mocap” technology at SIGGRAPH 2011 in Vancouver. Moving mocap out of the lab and into the field, Vicon's Mobile Mocap system taps several new technologies, many years in the making. At the heart of Mobile Mocap is a very small lipstick-sized camera that enables less obtrusive, more accurate facial animation data. The new cameras capture 720p (1280X720) footage at 60 frames per second. In addition, a powerful processing unit synchronizes, stores, and wirelessly transmits the data, all in a tiny wearable design.
