A Thanksgiving surprise, indeed. Whether there will be anything “bountiful” to reap, for those involved, remains to be seen.
From the WGA’s announcement, earlier Friday evening: “Leaders from the WGA and the AMPTP have mutually agreed to resume formal negotiations on November 26. No other details or press statements will be issued.” That’s the exact same statement the AMPTP released, as well, so at least the two sides agree on that.
A Reuters article on the announcement said word of the talks “came hours after the strike claimed its first big-screen casualty, with production of a highly anticipated follow-up to the box-office hit “The Da Vinci Code” starring Tom Hanks put on hold.
“In an online message to union members, WGA West President Patric Verrone hailed the breakthrough as a result of the union’s resolve.
“‘This announcement is a direct result of your efforts,’ he wrote. ‘For 12 days I have repeated that a powerful strike means a short strike.’
“He added the guild would suspend picketing next Wednesday through Sunday, the eve of the next bargaining session, due to the Thanksgiving holiday.”
Whether the strike itself remains more “powerful” than the incentive(s) to get back to work, well, we’re about to find out, sometime after the very last of the leftover pumpkin pie is cleared away…
