Blog the Line
At Below the Line we have been receiving several letters from working crew and their families who are affected by the WGA strike. In the interest of airing these views, and letting people assess the strike’s full impact, we will publish some of them online, such as the one below. If you would like send your own comment, click on Feedback at www.btlnews.com.
My name is Denise Franks. I have no affiliation with WGA or with AMPTP
I am the 38-year-old wife of a Local 44 member. I have two children, and I have many family members and friends in the movie industry.
Like many, my husband and I recall the last strike and how, as a young couple with a newborn, we took large hits to our lives. Recovery from that was nearly impossible and without the help of my parents we never would have made it. I never imagined I would be faced again with the prospect of calling my parents, asking them if my family could move in with them because there is no income to support us.
I am one of hundreds working below the line who fear of losing what little we have right now. I just couldn’t stand not at least giving a voice to the people who gain nothing from this cause, but who will be the first to suffer for this cause, and the last to recover from it. Without a doubt we will not be compensated for our sufferings.
This letter is being handed out to strikers, the news networks and the Governor’s office. Many wives and children are ready to be heard. We want to try to make these two forces end this suffering now and take responsible action to resolve this strike. We need them to hear us.

1This hits home is quite simple terms. When the Union allows its Spokesman to relish the pain he is causing it shows how out of touch they are with reality. There is NO point to the picketline. A picketline is there to rally public support and this strike has NO public support in Burbank. The union would be much better served to take to the medium they seek to harvest from and elicit support there. There is so much injustice in the entertainment industry this strike does not touch on its sad-how about if Jesse Jackson addresses that not writer’s not getting enough residuals; not enough minorities, women, equal pay for both. This strike is being so mishandled by the union it sad. There is NO media coverage because…wow what a surprise…no one cares and the union has no public support

2Thanks Toni and Denise! Your comments really hit home with me. I have never been so scared in my life What has happened to my livelihood? (in a blink of an eye.) What are we supposed to do? And Young’s comments are abominable! I read that article on the front page of the LA Times last week. I couldnt believe it. He’s another short sighted, “might is right”, arrogant, short- sighted man. Is this a game to him? Did you read Peter Cherin’s comment?
“Strike? Yes, please May I have another?” This is ludicrous!
So what can We do?! Anybody listening?! Maybe, we better hit the STREETS AND PROTEST! We had better start getting as loud as these two assholes. No one is hearing us! I can understand that the writers want their fair share, that is fine, but when their actions effect the economy and livelihoods of other people it’s not right. Not this time! Look at the state the economy is in now. The housing market is falling. There are warning signals everywhere. Producers dont care, conglomerates dont care. They’re immune. I dont think I’ll be able to go back to work and look them in the face again, to be quite frank. So, what do you say? Anybody ready to speak out? PUBLICLY! I am!

4Peggy, one thing I have learned about the “Entertainment business” is that people within have a VERY long memory for those that help and are nice (yes nice) and those that are nasty, rude or tough to work with…so many people in this town hold onto and enbrace anything done to them YEARS earlier its odd so many writers do not seem to recognize that…and I am not saying they can start shouting about their long past and always dear “blacklist era” just they have behaved like total arrogant assholes.
When I first started a high level studio executive told me to remember nice, reliable, dependable people like to work with and assoicate with the same, while shitty, nasty, rude people assocate with alike and never move past a certain level. That said your right people will remember the callous, all about ME attitude the writers took…while they boast that the “people” are with them its not the people in far off New York they have to face and deal with but us folks here in Burbank who will remember what a a shitty Christmas they fed so many.
